ACIM is a comprehensive metaphysical guide that has transformed many lives since its release in the 1970s. It was written down by Dr. Helen Schucman, a faculty member at Columbia University, who reported hearing an inner voice identifying itself as Jesus. Over a period of seven years, she shared what she heard to her colleague Dr. William Thetford, who recorded the messages. Despite its use of Christian terminology, ACIM is non-denominational and presents a unique spiritual system designed to bring the reader to a personal realization of divine love through practice and insight. It offers an contrast to traditional theology, encouraging self-discovery over religious tradition.

The Course is structured in three parts: the Text, the Workbook for Students, and the Manual for Teachers. The Text explains the core philosophy of the Course’s teachings, which revolve around the idea that the world we see is an ego-made dream created by the ego to conceal truth. The Workbook contains daily exercises, designed to help the student move beyond fear. The Manual answers questions for those who feel called to be helpers. Together, these sections form a holistic learning path, encouraging the reader to let go of false beliefs and embrace a new perception.

At its core, ACIM teaches that the only true reality is perfect love, and everything else—suffering, hatred, and loss—is part of an illusion generated by the ego. The Course defines miracles not as divine interventions, but as shifts in perception from fear to love, from division to oneness. These miracles are seen as healing responses of choosing the inner teacher over the thought system of fear. In this context, a miracle is a transformation that restores perception. Forgiveness, in ACIM, is the primary tool for healing the mind and awakening to the presence of love.

The concept of forgiveness in A Course in Miracles differs significantly from conventional understandings. It is not about pardoning someone for a wrongdoing, but about seeing that the perceived offense never truly happened because it occurred in a false mental realm. Forgiveness becomes a means of releasing both oneself and others from guilt, which the Course sees as the foundation of fear. By forgiving, the student accepts the shared innocence of all beings and breaks the illusion of attack. This practice opens the mind to a quiet joy that has never left us but was temporarily hidden.

The Course presents the world as a projection of the mind, emphasizing that there is no objective reality "out there". Everything we perceive is filtered through our individual minds. The ego, which relies on fear, clouds understanding and convinces us that we are separate. The Holy Spirit is the corrective voice that helps us reinterpret experiences through the lens of divine clarity. By choosing the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we undo the mental illusions we have built and return to the awareness of our true Self—united in love.

The language of the Course can be rich and profound, drawing on Christian metaphors while offering a philosophy closer to mysticism. Many students find it intellectually challenging and spiritually impactful. The lessons are experiential, andacim  often inspire deep inner shifts over time. It is common for students to revisit the Workbook, each time uncovering deeper layers. Rather than promising instant enlightenment, the Course offers a gradual path of spiritual evolution through ongoing dedication.

The Course also reshapes conventional religious views of sin, salvation, and sacrifice. It teaches that sin is not real, not a crime to be punished. Salvation is not earned through suffering, but is remembered by acknowledging our inherent innocence. Sacrifice is unnecessary because there is no loss in truth. This perspective is often liberating for those who have struggled with religious fear. ACIM invites us to lay down our defenses and come to know God as pure love, not a harsh authority.
